You hear all the time about foods that you should or shouldn’t be eating. Some of these foods that we are told to have would need us to eat a lot of it for any health benefit. There are some other foods that give us a lot more nutrition and don’t need us to be constantly eating it. They are often called superfoods as they give us the biggest nutritional boost and the best ‘bang for our buck’ in terms of nutrition. They give us health benefits as well as being low in calories. So it’s a no-brainer, right? Here are some foods that if you aren’t already eating, you need to start to!

Kale

Kale is full of antioxidants and is so good for us. It is full of vitamins that can help us, in particular, help to keep our skin looking clear. It is also good for eye health and our immune system. It even contains nearly as much vitamin c as an orange. Not many veggies that can say that about themselves, can they?

It is also such a versatile food. You can have it raw in things like salads. You can also make into ‘crisps’ by roasting it with a little olive oil and seasoning. You can stir it into stews and casseroles to give them an extra vitamin boost. It is also a quick way of adding extra vitamins into smoothies. Throw it in your blender with your favourite smoothie recipe and it will just blend right in.

Lentils

Lentils are another great food to be having in our diet. Like kale, they are super versatile and can

be used in many ways. They can also be quite cheap to buy. I like to get lentils and garbanzo beans from www.palousebrand.com as they are ethically grown. A lot of people won’t have thought of lentils as a superfood, though. But they are packed full of protein and fiber. So for vegetarians and vegans, they are a must-have in your diet. Lentils are a brilliant source of iron and folic acid. So if you are wanting to get pregnant, or are pregnant, pack them into your foods!

Pomegranates

If you look at a pomegranate, particularly if it is sliced open, it can resemble a heart with the different chambers and sections. This could be a reason why pomegranates are so good for your heart health, and can help to prevent heart disease. They are full of antioxidants too so make sure you have plenty in your diet. They can be a little fiddly to prepare, but getting cold-pressed pomegranate juice is a great way to get the nutrients. Pomegranates are a great source of fiber too. You can find out a little more about why pomegranates are good for you at www.livestrong.com.
