Talk It Out With Someone You Trust

My number one go-to whenever I’m upset is calling my mom. And you know what my mom’s number one go-to is whenever she’s too stressed out? Calling her mom. You’re never too old to call your mom when you’re feeling overwhelmed. For me, she’s the one who can always calm me down enough to see the rational side of things. If I’m freaked out about my future, she’ll always talk me up and put me in a better mood. When I have a big problem I’m dealing with, like a fight with a friend, she’ll offer advice on what to say. And if I feel stressed about something small, she’ll help me realize that I should not waste my energy worrying about it.

Sometimes, all you need is a fresh set of eyes to look at your worries. Whether it’s a parent, trusted friend, or mentor, everyone needs someone they can go to who can offer them a fresh perspective on their stressors. Your first step in a New Year’s stress cleanse is to figure out who this person is in your life.

Write Down What You Feel Worried About

One of the biggest issues with stress today is that it often consumes our thoughts. Despite this however, it can sometimes still be difficult to pinpoint what exactly is stressing you out. On days when you’re feeling like life is just too overwhelming, pull out a piece of paper and start writing. Write down everything that is making you worry. It can be something as big as worrying about whether you’ll ever get the job of your dreams, or as small as worrying if your milk will last until your next grocery run. No matter what it is, write it down so that you can see it. Once you’ve written down everything that’s on your mind, you can start systematically addressing each issue. Which brings us to the next step of your stress cleanse…

Create a Plan of Attack

I tend to feel the most stressed about life when I feel that too many things are piling up and I have no idea how I’ll ever get to everything. For this reason, the beginning of a semester is often stressful for me. All I can see is all of my assignments for the term coming in and I worry how I will be able to get everything done. However, I have learned to combat this stress by writing down every assignment in my planner. Once I see how I can spread everything out, I often feel better.

One of the biggest stressors in our lives is feeling like we don’t have enough time to accomplish everything. Once you write down everything you have to do and/or are worried about, you can pull out your calendar and block out time each day to accomplish your tasks. When you see that you really do have the time to get everything done, you’ll feel much less stressed. Then you can free up some brain space to put towards tackling your goals!

Sweat It Out

Sometimes, the things you feel stressed about are too big or broad for planning to completely resolve them. For example, if you feel stressed about your future, planning how you’re going to get your dream job can only get you so far. At the end of the day, it still might stress you out. So the next step in your stress cleanse is to try things to help you take your mind off of your stress. One way to do this is by working out.

For many people, working out is a great way to distract yourself from whatever is worrying you. It’s pretty hard to have an existential crisis when you’re too busy trying not to fall over after running several miles or desperately trying to copy the moves of a fitness instructor. And if you have anger mixed with your pent up stress, exercising is a fantastic way to get out your aggression. Just put whatever anger you have into energy to get that workout done.

There are plenty of ways you can work out easily, from running around the block to trying an at-home workout class like Daily Burn. You can also opt for a less angry and more relaxing workout like yoga. Yoga Download is one way you can practice from the comfort of your home. You won’t have time to feel stressed when you’re busy trying to copy all of the complex moves without falling over! Yoga also has the added perk of calming you down so that your whole body can relax. Which brings us to the last part of your stress cleanse…
