Why Mother’s Day is One of the Most Important Days of the Year
May 14th. The one day a year we are morally obligated to tell our mothers what they mean to us. Or at the very least get them a card that will. Yet when we really take the time to stop and think about it, our mothers should be celebrated every day of their lives.
I have often been teased by people about how close I am to my mother. I’m not ashamed to say that she’s my best friend (notice all of the photos I provided)! My mother is the OG ride or die that I know will always fiercely love me and stand in my corner. No one could ask for a better person. So with all of that being said, here is why Mother’s Day is one of the most important days of the year.

What is a Mother?
Let’s start off by defining what a mother is. No, I’m not trying to belittle your intelligence, I just want you to see what I mean when I talk about a mother. Your mother is not always the person that gave birth to you, nor are they the person that raised you. Hell, your mother doesn’t have to even be a woman.
To mother means to provide care and affection while also providing guidance for you to be the best you. I have two mothers (no they’re not lesbians) that have both raised me and supported me throughout the years. One gave birth to me and the other has been there throughout all of my life. So a mother can be whoever you see to be the one that was there and has supported you.
OG Ride or Die
As I mentioned before, my birth mother is the OG ride or die. Who can ever have another OG ride or die? Yes, you may have another ride or die in your life, such as a best friend, but no one compares to the OG. Your mother is always down to support you and guide you throughout life. If you were to get into some trouble, she is the first one you call. Though my mother would leave me there for a bit until I learned my lesson, but then she would help me out.
Why would you not celebrate that person for sticking by your side through thick and thin? They have obviously seen you at your worst at some point so you know there will always be zero judgment. That’s the best type of person I could ever ask for. They are your safe haven when life starts to get too crazy.
I think Tupac summed it up perfectly in “Dear Mama”
‘Cause through the drama I can always depend on my mama
And when it seems that I’m hopeless
You say the words that can get me back in focus
When I was sick as a little kid
To keep me happy, there’s no limit to the things you did
And all my childhood memories

Sounding Board
Now let’s be honest. If it wasn’t for my mother, I would probably have green hair and be in jail. Pretty extreme I know but by being my sounding board for all of my ideas and every time I get upset, she has saved me from a horrid hair decision and a criminal record for punching people in the throat.
Without my mother, I would be so lost and look a hot mess. So once again you can see why celebrating this person should be such a huge deal. Just think back to all of the terrible decisions you could have made in your life. Don’t worry I’ll wait……………yeah go down to Burlington Coat Factory now and find the nicest thing there for your mother.
Glimpse into Your Future
Looking at your mother is like looking at your future. Yeah, take it in because that’s who you are going to become. I mean think about it. If you consider this person your mother, that means you spend a great deal of time around them and take advice from them. You know the saying that you become a bit like the people you surround yourself with. It only makes sense that your mother is a vision of you in the future.
But is that so terrible? Yeah, I hope my fashion sense is a little better (no offense Mom) but I can’t wait to have the chance to mother someone else and follow in my mother’s footsteps. So by you celebrating Mother’s Day, you are celebrating the person that mothered you and the mother you may become someday.

But Most of All
The granddaddy of them all though is that you will never find someone who loves you as much as your momma. No matter how many tattoos, piercings, and crazy whimsical ideas I have, I know she will always be there to support me (even though she wants the tattoos to stop). And it’s not that superficial kind of love. A mother’s love is that deeply honest and sometimes hurtful truth that keeps you on track. You wouldn’t want someone who just tells you all the great things you do (although it’s nice sometimes). No, you need someone that will keep it 100, and there is no better person than your mom.
